Caregiving for a loved one can easily be one of the most stressful and exhausting experiences in a lifetime. Burnout is real and reaching out for support can be life changing. Self-care is such an important aspect of rejuvenation not only to be a better care partner but also to sustain yourself and your needs. Additionally, families are under financial and emotional strain and accessing resources is vital. These stressful situations can result in high anxiety and getting these services can make a real difference.

1. Finding A Licensed Therapist.

There is an array of complicated emotions and feelings surrounding being a care partner. Sadness, grief, relief, and anxiety are all part of the picture. Getting support from a licensed therapist is one critical pathway to learning new skills to handle difficult thoughts and feelings more effectively. Finding a therapist who specializes in the transitions of life and the needs of older adults can be very beneficial in developing a customized plan to help meet your needs and the needs of the individual you are caring for.

2. Self-Care

Hand in hand with working with a therapist, you cannot neglect self-care. Collaborating with your therapist can help you develop an individualized plan that works for you. A holistic approach can bring together all of the elements necessary to nourish your body, mind and spirit. Some basic elements you can bring into any self-care plan could include reaching out for support from friends, family members and professionals. Think of things that are comforting to you such as a walk outside, listening to music or even a warm bath.

3. Finding Affordable Care/Resources

You cannot do it alone so sometimes professional caregivers can provide much needed respite care for your loved one. There are resources out there that can help pay for care. You can find these resources at the Eldercare Locator.
